Where there's little competition and a lot of gratitude
Separately about the thing few people do, because it looks unserious.
General services get built by everyone. Competition there is savage and without a budget there's no point walking in. Narrow subjects, on the other hand, are often completely unoccupied - because they're boring, because the market is small, because "who would even need that".
Here's how it works: people inside a narrow subject suffer from the absence of decent tools, look for them for years, and are delighted by anyone who builds one. They also pay far more readily, because there's no alternative.
Where to look: your hobby, your job, the communities you're already in. Crypto, collecting, sport, a rare profession, local things for your own city. The narrower, the fewer competitors.
The test is simple: if you know a subject well enough to see where it's awkward, you already have an advantage over everyone who doesn't. That advantage is the thing worth turning into a project.
