← AI Roadmap - 76 Steps from Zero to Shipped

stage · Upgrading your AI

35Don't install everything

The rule of three to six, and why more makes it worse

The temptation is obvious: thousands of servers, all interesting, why not connect a pile. Don't, and here's why.

Confusion. Different servers have similar tools. With many of them the AI starts grabbing the wrong one, and you sit there wondering why it went somewhere strange.

Security. Every server is someone else's program running with your permissions: it can see files, keys, messages. Install only well-known ones, from the services themselves or with a big, active community, not the first thing you find in a catalogue.

Memory. In many agents the descriptions of every tool sit in context before you've asked a single question. Claude Code learned to load them only when needed, but not every tool can, and context room isn't unlimited.

The working number is three to six. The rule is simple: connect one when you have a concrete need. Not "just in case" but "I need it to look into my database". No task, no server.
