How to choose a server?
If you've never rented a server before - trust me, it's easier than it sounds. You pick a provider, choose a plan with the right amount of cores, RAM and disk, pay, and in 2 minutes you get an IP address and password. Connect via SSH (or just through the browser console) and you're already the admin of your own little computer somewhere in Amsterdam or Frankfurt. That's literally it. If you work with AI, you can ask your AI to connect on its own and host your projects, just giving it the server credentials. Not sure if that's the proper way, but that's what I do personally :)
For bots, scripts and light tasks - the cheapest VPS will do ($3-10/mo). 1-2 cores, 1-2 GB RAM, 10-30 GB NVMe. This is enough to run a couple of bots, monitoring, cron scripts, or a simple web app. Don't overthink it: OVHCloud gives 2 cores and 4 GB for about $5.35, Vultr has 1 core and 1 GB for $5 in 33 regions, CherryServers starts at €3, and 4VPS takes cards, SBP and crypto. By the way, this site started on Aeza and now runs on Netcup.
For nodes and validators - read the host's rules first, not just the price. Plenty of hosts ban more than mining: WebDock bans any blockchain and testnet workloads, HostingVDS, FirstVDS and 1Dedic ban running nodes, TimeWeb bans reward-earning validators, and Aeza banned all crypto activity in September 2026 on top of being under US sanctions. Hetzner bans mining and once switched off about a thousand Solana validators at once. The friendly ones: OVHCloud explicitly allows Proof of Stake validation in its terms, Contabo openly welcomes nodes and staking, VDSina's FAQ says outright that mining is allowed, and CherryServers and Latitude host validators for a living (Latitude has bare metal up to 96 cores and 1.5 TB RAM). For a real node plan on 4-16+ cores, 8-32+ GB RAM and fast NVMe with 200+ GB. Need a GPU for AI or a GPU node? Then it's Vast.ai, by the hour.
If privacy matters - be skeptical of 'offshore, no KYC, DMCA-free' ads. When I re-checked this list in September 2026, most hosts that sold themselves that way now do KYC, keep logs or act on complaints, and two of them are gone: Dutch police raided THE.Hosting in May 2026, and GeoHosting shut down the same week. Look at the badges on the cards (KYC, DMCA Free, No nodes) and at the payment icons, pay with crypto where it's accepted, and never keep anything on a server that you can't afford to lose.
Location matters: pick a server close to whatever you're interacting with. Running a bot that hits EU endpoints? Get a server in Amsterdam or Frankfurt. Targeting US platforms? Pick New York or Dallas. The difference between 20ms and 200ms might not sound like much, but your scripts will thank you.
Tip: don't put all your eggs in one basket. Spread critical tasks across 2-3 providers. If one goes down or decides to terminate your account - you won't lose everything at once. And check the monthly price on the provider's own site before paying: a lot of them show a yearly price divided by 12.
